Mount Rushmore

History of Mount Rushmore

Was started in 1927 by the man by the name of Gutzon Borglum the idea of making it in the first place was Doane Robsin in 1923. Mount Rushmore is a park because it remembers the great four presidents of the past Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincon and Theodore Roosevelt. The monument has been sculpted very well the past 84 years the head of each president has been sculpted into the Back Hills. Although the monument was suppose to go down to each of the president’s waist. But there weren’t enough funds to make this happen. And in 1930 the monument officially became a national park.

Park Info

Mount Rushmore gets many visitors about more than 2 million a year! Mount Rushmore is located in South Dakota right in the middle where the Black Hills are located. Visitors can expect to see the amazing work of Gutzon Borglum and also see the monument crazy horse which is right now in process of being sculpted. It is a monument of an Indian named Chief Crazy Horse. He is on a horse pointing because in 1876 he was fighting General Custer’s 7th cavalry and he was telling his Indians to go and attack. This was made to show the culture, tradition, and living heritage of the Native Americans.

Why is Mount Rushmore a National Treasure?

Mount Rushmore should be honored as a National Treasure because these four presidents played a major role in American History and this is a way to always remember them for what they all did.
